So you’ve finally gotten that tattoo that you wanted, and you walk away from the tattoo shop happy and enjoying your tattoo. But what do you do next? How can you ensure you allow your tattoo to heal properly and make it last a lifetime?
Here are some tips on how to keep your tattoo perfect from day one and prevent an infection or discoloration of your tattoo.
Tip 1
Leave that bandage alone. It can be tempting to want to remove the bandaging on the tattoo and take a peek, but you need to wait. Removing the bandage too early can cause your tattoo to get infected. Right now your tattoo is a gaping wound in your skin, it needs to be given time to heal, and keeping the bandage on is the first step to allowing it to heal properly.
Your bandage needs to be left on at bare minimum two hours. The longer you can give it without removing the bandage the better off it will be. That bandage is standing between your new ink and air borne bacteria, as well as whatever it may come into contact with if you remove it.
Tip 2
Wash and clean your tattoo. Once your bandage time is over, it is important to wash and cleanse the tattoo area. Use a mild antibacterial liquid soap as well as lukewarm water to remove any dried blood or ooze. (The ooze that comes out of the tattoo can become a scab on the tattoo if left on.) Do not use a washcloth or anything abrasive. Simply use your hand and the water to do it and your tattoo will thank you for it.
Once you have cleaned the tattoo, you need to dry it. Again, avoid using a face cloth or towel. Instead use a paper towel and just blot it dry. Follow it with a thin layer of the ointment that should have been supplied by the tattoo shop. If you were not given any ointment to use, you can use any antibacterial lotion, something like Bacitracin works quite well. You may also want to go with one that is hypoallergenic if you have sensitivities to soaps and medications, as hives can cause a polka dot effect on your tattoo once the hives have healed and gone away.
Just following these two tips can ensure you give your tattoo it’s best chance of healing and being a tattoo you can be proud of and show off for years to come. Proper healing gives your tattoo the best chance to become a thing of beauty that will last for a lifetime.
