It’s becoming very common in today’s world of web 2.0 to listen to music online for free. Music fans are overjoyed at the ability to hear what they want, when they want. Some artists are delighted at the chance to be heard in more places, but others are concerned about where this could put their livelihood.
One thing that seems pretty clear is the fact that fans are now accustomed to, and will continue to popularize places that let you listen to music online for free.
The RIAA can’t stop it, Major Labels can’t stop it. It seems that the best solution is to figure out a new way to profit from this sort of thing.
Lots of startups that let users listen to music online for free have tried revenue models that involve advertising, mainly banner ads and audio ads that play between streams. This seemed like a potentially good idea, however many of these startups have had trouble surviving this way.
This is because, after they finish paying the labels and other required parties, there isn’t much left to pay the bills, or leave enough net profit to be worthwhile.
Some of these startups have sold themselves to other bigger music startups and moved on, while others have been shut down by regulatory parties such as the RIAA.
So the search to find a means to profit from letting users listen to and discover new music online for free still continues. I personally believe that there is potential for a system where value is exchanged between a fan and an artist, that doesn’t have to involve the regulatory parties.
